Friday le...

Day 16 Friday Sunny Clear Temperature 12 Deg

I just got back to my office from lunch and amazingly, lunch was only 30mins.. Beijing people seem to prefer swallowing their food rather then chewing and enjoying it. Maybe because the food provided wasn’t good enough, but I don’t see a need for them to leave office for lunch at 12.00pm and be back in the office at 12.15-12.20pm. It was totally ridiculous, I tried once to follow their speed and even thou I didn’t finish all my food, I was still a lot slower and my colleague was already waiting for me.. On the average, in about 5-8 mins everything on the tray will be consumed.. Scary to imagine huh.. I still prefer to enjoy my lunch and take my time to eat.

I asked another colleague the other day about why most people here consume their food so fast, and he started telling me a long story. To summaries and cut things short, the essence of the story he explained to me was WAR. Well, according to him, when China was fighting the North Korea war or something like that, all soldiers were given exactly 5 mins to finish their meal and carry on fighting. But I totally believe that it has nothing to do with my question.. Hai.. Cos war was farking many years ago and these people were not involved in it..

During my short stay here in Beijing, I’ve thought of another way to describe some/most people’s attitude towards work; it’s just like driving a manual car. During working hours, everyone seems to be taking their time to do their things and taking things a lot easier compared to people in Singapore. Like a car traveling slowly in first gear all the way, has a high risk of “Si Qia-ing”, and before that happens, will “Chua Qia” till “Si Qia”. But miraculously, during lunch and going home time, everyone seems to change from gear 1 to gear 5 smoothly and without hesitation.. It seems to be a working culture here for the local companies. When I was working for Ascott (Shanghai), it was totally different. Everyone was very on the ball.. Hmm.. Maybe that's why they are so productive compared to the local companies.

Alright then, have a nice day..

Regards
James
